KOH PHANGAN IN MODERN TIMES
The majority of people who make Koh Phangan their permanent home live around Thong Sala. The island has approximately 10,000 permanent residents, which are a mix of Thai, Chinese, ex-pats, and everything in between. Most people who live in Koh Phangan are Buddhist, though there is a small community of Muslims in the village of Baan Tai.
Besides tourism and coconuts, Koh Phangan supports itself by fishing.
The full moon party at Had Rin Beach may have given birth to a dozen world-class restaurants, hotels, resorts, and assorted services all along the more popular beaches, but this is still a place where most people follow the rhythms of day and night-they get up with the sun and go to bed as the moon rises.
Koh Phangan tourism is still in the early stages of development. It is many years behind islands like Koh Samui and Koh Phuket.
Due to lack of infra-structure like roads, the development has been very slow. Most development is situated on the south and western coast of the island due to the main town of Thongsala and the main road. The beaches of the south and western coast are very nice, but suffer a little bit from broken shallow coral growth and rocks at low tide. The best beaches for all year swimming are situated on the north eastern and eastern coast. The twin bay of Thong Nai Pan are some of the very best beaches in Thailand together with the lesser accessible Bottle beach.
The Road to Thong Nai Pan has been built and upgraded during the last few years, but it has now been decided and financed a government standard concrete road all the way from the main road at Ban Tai’s Seven Eleven junction and all the way to Thong Nai Pan yai. The work has already started and the result looks very promising.
Just to give you an idea of the speed of the development on Koh Phangan, there where about 207 bungalow and hotel operations with the total of about 3500 rooms in the year 2000. In 2005, the number was increased to about 360 bungalow and hotel operations with the total of about 6500 rooms. The new development has started now to cater for more family oriented tourists. Koh Phangan used to be a backpacker heaven with its infamous full moon parties at Had Rin beach.
A number of luxury hotel developments have already been built with Santhiya Resort & Spa and Panviman Resort in Thong Nai Pan as some of Thailand most luxurious resorts.
The luxury private villa market has also started on the island. Several projects have been planned and a few are under construction. There are also plans for several luxury housing projects in Thong Nai Pan, and Thong Nai Pan Estate will be one of the first and most luxurious with it's perfect location.
Thong Nai Pan Estate will be one of the premiere developments in the area with its beautiful location, exceptional bay, ocean and beach view, very luxurious villas and a huge common area. The prices for buying your dream villa in Koh Phangan are still very low compared to Koh Samui and Koh Phuket.
